But, I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have  , fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.  For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.  For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the

voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God.  And the dead in Christ

will rise first.  Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up in the clouds

to meet the Lord in the air.  And thus we shall always be with the Lord.

                                                                                I Thessalonians 4:13-17

The term fallen asleep refers to those who have died believing in Jesus Christ.  It does not refer to soul sleep. When a believer in Jesus Christ dies they go to be with the Lord instantly.  Their soul goes to be with Jesus Christ and they are immediately in the presence of the Lord.  We are confident, yes well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.  2 Corinthians 5:8

There is no soul sleep, limbo, or purgatory in the Bible.  When a believer in Christ dies they go directly to heaven with Jesus Christ.   However, when someone dies who is not a believer, or someone who has rejected God's free offer of salvation in Jesus Christ.  When that person dies they go to a place called Sheol-Hades, which is like a cosmic waiting room in another dimension.  They stay in Sheol-Hades until after the 1,000 year Millennial reign of Jesus Christ on Planet Earth.  Than at the end of the Millennium they are resurrected at what is called the second resurrection of all unbelievers who are collected in Sheol-Hades until the end of history.  They will go to the Great White Throne of Judgment.

In Revelation 21:11-14 we read these words, Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and heaven fled away.  And there was found no place for them.  And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened.  And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life.  And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.  The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them.  And they were judged, each one according to his works.  Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fired.  This is the second death.  And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

It is at the Great White Throne of Judgment that every man and woman alive who chose to reject God's offer of salvation and rebel against God will be judged.  The judgment is not cruel and entirely fair because anyone who wanted to could have gone to heaven.  These are the people who chose not to go to heaven.  They wanted nothing to do with God and they will get their wish for all eternity.  There are those people who are on the earth today who hate God.  They mock His commandments, they kill believers, and they attempt to destroy any reference to God and His name in our culture or world.  These people are in rebellion from God and they hate Him..

God has made a provision for the Old Testament dead who believed in Gods offer of salvation through faith even though Jesus Christ had not been revealed.  These Old Testament believers like David, Moses, Joshua, Sarah, Esther, Jacob, Ruth and many others will join us in heaven.  When these Old Testament believers die they go to a place in Sheol-Hades called Paradise or Abrahams Bosom.  Sheol-Hades is a giant cosmic waiting dimension.  However, Sheol-Hades is divided into two entirely separate compartments.  One compartment is the place for Old Testament believers called Paradise or Abrahams Bosom.  Then there is a barrier between the two compartments called The Great Gulf Fixed that divides the compartments.  The other compartment is called The Place of Torment for the wicked dead.

The reason the Old Testament saints could not go directly to heaven is because Jesus Christ had hot yet come to provided a permanent sacrifice for sin.  When Jesus Christ cried from the cross, It is finished! John 19:30, He was stating that the final sacrifice for man's sin had been completely paid.  When Jesus released His soul He descended into Sheol-Hades and led all the Old Testament believers into heaven.

Paul gives a comforting message that explains exactly what happens where a person dies?  Where do they go?  This message answers the questions about exactly what happens after a person's spirit or soul leaves their body.  It also explains what happens to non-believers when they die, and and what happens to the people in the Old Testament after they died.  It is a loving message that will give comfort to those who are facing death, or loved ones who have to deal with the death of someone they love. It is also an important teaching that every believer should know about what the Bible says about where people go after they die.  This is a teaching every believer in Jesus Christ should understand.  Also, it is a great teaching to give to people who don't know the Lord. and a teaching that should be heard by nominal believers, those who have strayed away from the Lord, and young people, and adults who think they can live anyway they please.  Download this teaching now and understand what happens to a person after they die.
